Let me start this off by saying, Usually I am one who likes change for change’s sake. Not one hundred percent of the time, but most of the time.
Since about September/August I have been mixing the band in Overdrive, one of our Venues at Parkcrest. It is something I enjoy doing. We have a fairly good rotation of musicians that come through on a monthly basis. Today while I was mixing I was asked a question, and I see both sides to this question. “Do I prefer having one band consistently every week or band switching out every week?”
It is a great question, and it brings up some good thoughts. On one hand if you have switching it allows for more involvement. On the other the quality of music goes up because you have that consistent presence.
I answered the best I could, and I have a couple reasons. One is like I mentioned before, the quality of music increases consistently because you don’t have to worry about who knows how to play this, or who is weak on this song. When you have that consistent band you can learn how play together and make music together. The other reason is from a FOH Sound perspective, I want that consistency. I want those players that when they show up I know exactly how they should sound so I can dial them in without major work. It makes my life easier and ultimately I can give a better performance because I am comfortable with what I am working with.
What are some thoughts?
